The Rock Band Mentoring Program was crafted — no, forged, like a mythical sword — for all you glorious grown up wonders who STILL feel that uncontrollable twitch in your soul whenever you hear one of your favourite rock songs. You know the one. That tiny inner goblin that jumps up and screams:
“GO ON! START A ROCK BAND BEFORE YOU TURN TO DUST!”
But then life grabs you by the face and says,
“Calm down, you’re a grown-up. You have a favourite supermarket now.”
And so you talk yourself out of your own dreams like a total maniac.
“Oh, I don’t have time… I don't know anything about starting a rock band... I don’t even know where to begin… my back makes a noise like a bag of chips when I tie my shoes…”
And before you know it, you’re sitting on the couch, wearing slippers you SWORE you’d never buy, scrolling through Facebook like a pensioner trying to decode hieroglyphics.
But THEN…
WE appear.
Not strolling in. Not tapping politely.
NO.
We erupt into your life like a yeti with a drum kit.
Because the Rock Band Mentoring Program does EVERYTHING for you — and I mean the kind of everything that would’ve made old-school Scottish grannies say,
“Aw that’s no right, hen, people need to suffer a bit.”
You don’t organise anything.
You don’t plan anything.
You don’t even need to PRETEND you know what you’re doing.
We basically plop you right into a fully operational rock band.
All you have to do is:
SHOW UP.
Yes.
That’s it.
Show up and make noises, preferably musical ones.
Show up to rehearsals
Show up to gigs
We take care of everything else including:
Finding fellow band members who won’t terrify you
Rehearsals that don’t clash with your colonoscopy
Equipment that looks complicated but somehow works
Gigs that make you feel like a renegade teenager with better shoes
We sort every bit of it.
You don’t lift a finger.
You don’t organise a thing.
You don’t even need to pretend you know what the “gain knob” does
(nobody knows — it’s a mystery sent by the gods).
We handle:
Calendars
Tech setups
Sound systems
Negotiations
Logistics
People who say things like “Can I get a DI feed?”
And anything involving more than two buttons
You just stroll in, radiating middle-aged glamour, and act like the rock legend you were ALWAYS meant to be but got distracted by mortgages and Tupperware.
And suddenly…
There you are.
Onstage.
Lights blazing.
Crowd roaring.
Your inner teenager screaming,
“WE’RE BACK, BABY!”
And your adult self thinking,
“ I hope I stretched.”
The Rock Band Mentoring Program is for aspiring:
Acoustic guitarists
Electric Guitarists
Vocalists
Drummers
Bass players
Keyboard players
And Saxophonists
Beginners are welcome
All bands perform in front of a live audience every twelve weeks at one of Perth's top live venues.
The bands choose the songs they would like to perform.
Band rehearsals are in business hours, after hours and Saturdays.
The bands rehearse in a professional soundproofed rehearsal studio.
All equipment is provided including a drum kit, just bring your instrument.
The bands are between 4-7 members.
Most members sing or are learning.
Beginners have one on one sessions to learn the basics and the band songs until they are ready to join.
The band songs are fairly easy to learn, usually 4-6 chords so non-beginners can join straight away.
The sessions have been developed over the years to where they are now - a unique learning system that lets you learn the foundations of music while simultaneously playing them in a band format having lots of fun in the process.
We call these foundations of music, principles.
Principles are the common factors that appear in every song.
When you learn and start to hear the principles or patterns in the chaos that is music, the chaos is no more.
When you become proficient, you start to not only hear these principles in every song, you hear the same things coming up over and over again.
Principles are in music, not instruments which means the same principles apply to any instrument.
Instead of just learning a song, you want a system to learn any song and quickly.
It’s the difference between someone giving you a fish and someone teaching you how to fish.
Learn principles, not songs then you recognise the same patterns coming up over and over again. In other words, all songs become the same.
The following principles when used together will allow you to learn a lot faster.
Theory
Ear Training
Memory development
Improvising
Performance
Technique
Timing
The rock star attitude
The Tools
Theory
Transcribing (ear training)
Memory development
Improvising/soloing

The Vehicle

The Rock Star Attitude/Mindset
When you integrate one principle into your playing your learning becomes faster. As you add more and more it becomes a compounding effect where you can learn and internalise a new song in a day instead of weeks.
